Clarity Key To Segretto In-Ceiling Speakers.
Audiovisual retailer Videopro is so impressed with the sound quality of Brisbane-based technology company CEAD’s Segretto in-ceiling speakers, it has included them as a permanent feature in its futuristic showroom the 'iiiHome'.Segretto was a must inclusion in the $500,000 iiiHome, constructed at the Company's Fortitude Valley store to provide an insight into the future use of technology in Australian living areas.
"In the 33 years I've been in the audio industry I have never heard an invisible speaker with such clarity," Videopro Managing Director Shane Leaney said. "The response to the Segretto invisible speakers in the iiiHome has been amazing. One of the best parts about the Segretto is that it is totally invisible, easy to install and totally compliments the aesthetics of today's lifestyle." CEAD director John Hammett said commercial and residential designers and architects had become particularly interested in Segretto speakers as they pursued the goal of quality sound without unsightly speaker grills. "Segretto can be installed in home theatres, living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, outdoor living areas and around pools," he said. Mr Hammett said the technology behind Segretto was unique and based on harnessing the natural modes of vibration to reproduce high-quality sound. He said the company's research into the distributed mode behaviour of a panel to reproduce music and voice was the key to their success. "These technologies are derived from a profound understanding of bending wave physics and its applications to sound generation," he said. "Traditional cone speakers cannot be hidden and require grills or some type of apertures to be able to function." Quality components are used in the manufacture of the Segretto speakers, which are hand crafted in Australia and guaranteed for five years. Mr Hammett said Segretto can be easily installed during new building construction, refurbishment or into existing locations accessible by speaker cable. CEAD provides the installation using standard building techniques and materials. Go here to view the article as it appears in SMARTHOUSE site: www.smarthouse.com.au
MTR Digital Escalator Crown is the first digital and animated escalator advertising platform in Asia’s metro system.
Passengers can enjoy a story-telling advertising experience when travelling along the escalator. The high-definition screens and high-impact content impresses every pair of eyes passing by. Five pairs of escalator banks in 3 busiest MTR stations, with a total of more than 130 screens were in this first phase of the development plan. The project requires all screens to be managed and monitored from a couple of editor sites through the corporate media network. The screens in each escalator bank have to run in synchronized mode such that all the content in the screens are playing coherently.
DISE solution offers a central content management and distribution mechanism. The corporate administration and design office can manage the complete advertising network from a single access location. The player stations running on “Replay” are always playing synchronously across the series of screens alongside the escalator bank. The powerful and yet easy-to-use “Composer” enable content designer to develop creative advertising on a huge virtual ‘canvas’ covering the entire screen group. Staging and movement of both graphical and audio materials are arranged in the project definition and rendered on-the-fly - Last minute adjustment is possible as designer no longer rely on lengthily pre-produced video for each final screens.
First OZ HD Weatherproof TV a Miner Hit...
Australia’s first locally designed and built High Definition Industrial Weatherproof LCD is set to revolutionise operations in industrial workplaces such as mines.Brisbane-based CEAD has developed LCD displays especially for tough Australian conditions which can be used for occupational health and safety applications and visual communications. CEAD director, Brian Hammett said the LCD displays had an Ingress Protection (IP) rating of 66, after proving resistant to high pressure water jets and exposure inside a dust chamber. He said the weatherproof TVs were specifically designed to enable companies to visually communicate vital statistics and information in previously restricted environments such as underground mines.
Mr Hammett said the CEAD displays were manufactured in marine grade stainless steel and were totally sealed against moisture, humidity, dust and insects. The display face is made from 6.4mm thick, laminated, anti-glare glass.
“This LCD is built like a concrete bunker but definitely doesn’t look like one. It is a commercial grade full HD screen designed for 24 hour a day operations. It has applications across a wide range of industries and challenging environments. The High Definition Industrial Weatherproof LCD enables high quality communication with workers in large places such as wet areas, wash bays, workshops, stock warehouses, security stations and elsewhere on sites regardless of the locations and environmental conditions. TV monitors used outdoors usually only last a few months due to the moisture, heat or insects, but our weatherproof display will function for many years,” Mr Hammett said. “They can easily be fitted with a new screen in the future and provide long term savings for companies using the displays.”
The LCDs range in size from 101cm to 165cm, and have a 178 degree viewing angle. They are also fitted with thermostatic cooling protection to ensure long life operation. Mr Hammett said the monitors could be installed in offices as well as outdoor or underground working environments and can be securely wall mounted with a theft resistant device.

October 31st, 2008 - MIRROR, MIRROR on the wall Visitors to the Impetus Expo were among the first to use the EPC Magic Mirror.
The EPCmagic mirror is one of a number of social merchandising initiatives that GS1 Australia is introducing by leveraging GS1 EPCglobal standards. Technologies including RFID, mobile commerce, and content management, Internet/Web 2.0 along with GS1 standards have the foundation of these concepts. While these mirrors have been used in retail trials overseas, this is the first time one has been used in Australia, according to Davide Iacovitti, Applications & Content, NEC Australia. Powered by the usage of GS1 EPC/RFID standards this mirror will add a new dimension to consumer shopping. EPC/RFID technology enables the mirror to interact with shoppers in a retail environment to assist them in their choices and to provide them with recommendations on other possible purchases. The EPCmagic Mirror combines specially designed antennas with an integrated RFID reader to read RFID tags on clothing. As the shopper chooses a product and tries it in front of the mirror, the intelligent mirror will read the information on the tag and send the ID number to the central database of the store. Details of the product along with the available sizes and colors are sent back to the mirror which will also offer the shopper a suggestion about various accessories. The EPCmagic Mirror is a result of collaboration between NEC and its Digital Signage partner CEAD. The technology integrates NEC’s digital signage software and the prototype was developed and built at NEC’s research and development labs in Melbourne. “Shoppers are bombarded with hundreds of advertising messages and tons of information every time they go shopping. We wanted to develop a way of providing the information they need and want, when they need it,” Mr Iacovitti said. “With the intelligent mirror, we’re revolutionising the way we deliver this by displaying it inside the mirror as they are trying on their clothes. Retailers can tailor the content they wish to display on the mirror. For example, shoppers can see instantly what sizes and colours are available as well as pricing information and tips and advice on which accessory will go best with what they are wearing,” he said. Some of the main systems components are: 1. RFID Tags - EPC/RFID tags based on EPC Gen2 technology with GS1 trade item keys. 2. RFID Readers - UHF RFID readers and antennas based on EPC Gen 2 standards. 3. Glass - Reflective semi-transparent glass mirror solution from Germany. 4. RFID Software - RFID Middleware controller – Based on EPC ALE (Application level events) standards provided by NEC. 5. Digital signage software - Signage Software, multimedia and custom application development and a visual interactive terminal provided by NEC and it’s partner CEAD systems. 6. System integration and design by NEC and CEAD. CEAD AV highlights their new display systems and speakers...

The Groove Train gets wired...
For Brisbane riverside restaurant Groove Train, getting the sound system right was as important as creating a quality menu. With three restaurants in Melbourne, the Groove Train chain has set up in Brisbane alongside the hustle and bustle of the busy Riverside CityCat Ferry Terminal.
The challenge for owner Rocky Veneziano was finding the right ambience in the restaurant to blend with the noise of the passing people traffic from the ferry and a building with “the acoustics of a concrete box”. Rocky turned to an acoustic, visual and digital sciences company to design and install an integrated sound system for the Groove Train.
“Their speakers are amazing, you cannot see them and they sound crystal clear,” Rocky says. “Every day we receive compliments on the food but never before have we received so many compliments on the sound of our restaurant. Customers also comment on how the sound system enables them to focus on their own conversations and not on those happening at other tables.”
The sound can be turned up or down in different sections of the restaurant, with even the kitchen staff having control of their own volume.
The director of CEAD – the company behind the system – John Hammett, says the speakers installed in the ceiling of the Groove Train deliver a smooth full spectrum blanket of sound without any high or dead spots. “It’s all about the ambience in a restaurant where the taste, the smell, the sights and the sound should all blend together to create the right feel,” John says. “[They] provide a warm rich sound that enhances the ambience.”
CEAD, which has operations in Australia and Canada, has made recent breakthroughs with both distributed mode loudspeakers (DML) and balanced mode radiator (BMR) technology. CEAD’s technologies are based on harnessing the natural modes of vibration to reproduce high quality sound. “The result is outstanding speakers that deliver a true natural warm sound, ultra wide dispersion at full spectrum and crystal clear intelligibility,” John says. “We have challenged the physics and refused to be constrained by previous concepts. This has been a true research and development collaboration between our teams in Australia, Canada and our technology partner NXT in England.”
